TCH provides group homes and day programs in both Maricopa and Pima counties, and also offers home and community based services (respite, attendant care, and habilitation) in Maricopa County. Currently, we support approximately 110 people in our day programs and 75 people in our group homes, along with 100 people in HCBS (home and community based services).
Our day program, group home, and home and community based services (HCBS) all include habilitation, among other services. What is habilitation, you ask? Habilitation is different from Rehabilitation. While rehabilitation means “to return something to its former state”, the word habilitation refers to teaching training, and support. The individuals we support have formal, individualized goals, identified by them and their planning team that staff assist them in working towards. Habilitation goals can include anything from learning to choose weather appropriate clothing to managing one’s own finances.
A typical day for our members varies depending upon their wants and needs, but may look something like this;
Aaron* lives in a TCH group home and attends the TCH day program Monday-Friday. He wakes up around 6:30am, and staff assist him and his 4 roommates with breakfast and getting ready for their day. Everyone gets in the van and a staff member transports them to the day program, where their morning starts out with a classroom lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After that Aaron spends some time in our Unique Boutique area, where he works on painting one of our famous Flower Pot Friends to give to his mom for Valentine’s Day. After lunch, Aaron enjoys music therapy and then works on his habilitation goal, which is helping him learn to make a microwaveable meal. Then he and his roommates are transported home, where they relax for a while before participating with staff in dinner prep and their evening routine.
Here at TCH we strive to provide individualized support of the utmost quality to extraordinary people.
